BarChick's cocktail of the week: The Living Dead at The Red Bar at Bam-Bou

This week, BarChick takes us to a sultry, low-lit den near Charlotte Street
Cocktail of the week: BarChick recommends The Living Dead at Bam Bou
Barchick16 September 2014

The drink: The Living Dead

What’s in it? House blend of different rums, lime, orange and pink grapefruit juices, Punt e Mes (classic red vermouth), Heering Cherry Liqueur, bespoke grenadine, a few dashes of Angostura bitters and absinthe.

Why should we try it? The Living Dead is a unique twist on the Zombie, a cocktail that consists of fruit juices, liqueurs and various rums, and is so named because of its effects on the drinker. While still loyal to the classic Zombie, the rums are left to mellow and merge in an oak barrel to add smokiness, while the Punt e Mes adds a hint of bitterness and aromatic elements of cinnamon and smoky tobacco. It is bold and complex in flavour while remaining fruity and refreshing. It is served long over crushed ice in a traditional tiki mug garnished with mint, fresh berries and orange zest.

Where do we get it? Spread over four storeys of a quirky Georgian townhouse in the heart of Fitzrovia, Bam-Bou is a higgledy-piggledy house of fun and a little piece of Asian heaven. The Red Bar at Bam-Bou, run by Ladislav Piljar aka “Lad”, is one of those places that you wouldn’t necessarily think of going to, unless you’d been before. It’s at the top of the eighteenth century building with amazing views down Charlotte Street, with a sultry, low-lit, red-hued look and cocktails worthy of all the stairs you’ve got to climb to drink them. Only a stone’s throw from Soho, it’s the perfect spot for a nightcap.

Who should we ask for? The Red Bar boasts London’s most comprehensive Japanese whisky menu, along with a very enthusiastic and well-trained team, who can create something for all tastes. Go and say hello to Damien, Marek, Lad, Annie or Tim, but if you’re lucky head bartender Lad will mix it up for you.

How much is it? £13.50
