East London Liquor Company - bar review

Mile End is on the up as a new distillery-cum-cocktail-bar opens by the Regent's Canal, says Kate Lough
Part distillery, part cocktail bar: East London Liquor Company

What they say: A craft spirits producer with a cocktail bar situated in an old glue factory in Bow Wharf in the heart of London’s old spirits industry.

What we say: as a Mile Ender, I was beyond excitement to have a proper bar within walking distance. Still a well kept secret (there’s no signage), it’s just off the south side of Vicky Park and has been decorated simply with reclaimed brick walls and trestle tables — they let the shimmering copper distillers behind the bar’s glass wall do all the talking.

Good for: locals (bars are scant around these parts) and anyone interested in artisanal spirits.

Order: The gimlet #1 made with fermented lime if you like your drinks short and fuss-free like me. Or ask Canadian bartender Mikey to use you as a guinea pig for one of the new recipes he’s cooking up.

By the way: they’ll soon be selling their own gin, vodka, rum and whisky in beautiful Art Deco bottles, and running tours around the distillery.

Find it: Unit GFI, 221 Grove Road, Bow Wharf, E3, eastlondonliquorcompany.com
