The Jolly Butchers has undergone a real transformation

Jolly Butchers: beer is the star here
10 April 2012

Formerly the roughest pub in N16, with a late licence that attracted the local waifs and strays, this poor old pub has reverted to it's former name under the same ownership as the Rose and Crown up the road.

The transformation couldn't be more complete. Now described as an 'Ale and Cider' house, expect up to nine real ales from smaller breweries on tap, along with real ciders and Belgian offerings.

The pub layout is rather gastro in it's approach, but still warm and inviting; note the original tiling behind the bar. Although it's early days here, most of the signs are positive.

The staff could be a little more knowledgeable about the wares they serve, but we'll give them the benefit of the doubt. The clientele are also a mixed bunch - well, as mixed as you'll find in N16; we've not visited on a Sunday yet, so we can't confirm whether the Stokie Three Wheeled Pram User Group have made this a regular haunt yet.

Although you'll find a small upmarket menu on offer, beer is the star here - as it should be in a pub - so we wish them all the best.
