The Jugged Hare review: A top-end gastropub a stone's throw from the Barbican

A top-end pub in the city serving excellent Sunday roasts
The Jugged Hare, Barbican

The Jugged Hare is a top-end gastropub on Chiswell Street, representing one of the smartest drinking and dining spots in the area.

The bar features a good selection of beers, wines and spirits and also boasts a Jugged Hare pale ale brewed specifically for the pub. However, it’s the food that really helps it stand out.

As well as steaks, game and wild fish specials, its Sunday roasts are high on the agenda. Choose from whole or half chickens, roast legs of lamb, aged rump of beef or a suckling piglet for two to share, all the more flavourful for being cooked on the rotisserie. Duck fat roasties are wonderfully crisp-coated, while the rotisserie gravy (made as the varying meats drip their juices while cooking) has to be among the best in London.

The handsome dining space is a smart place to enjoy it all, with an open kitchen adding to the sense of occasion (and meaty aromas).
