Best credit crunch clubs in London

Priceless: pay nowt at Cube and enjoy the disco dancefloor
10 April 2012

Has there ever been a bleaker January? Sub-zero cold, post-Christmas debts and the credit crunch. But just because we're feeling the pinch doesn't mean we should forfeit our right to party. We need cheering nights out more than ever and the good folk of London's clubbing fraternity know it.

Promoters are waiving entry fees to leave us more cash to fritter away on booze. They're digging deep to give you great nights at the best venues with top-name DJs, all gratis. You just have to seek them out — or let us do it for you...

My Days Of Courting at Cube
Nestling down Tabernacle Street, in the heart of London's fashionable Hoxton, Cube is a brand-new subterrane an club with a brilliantly kitsch LED light-up floor, where you can dance out all your Disco 2000 fantasies.
On Saturdays a gaggle of great DJs, including the handsome and talented Serge Santiago, play disco, house and funk — all free for you. A hip joint that's light on your pocket as well.
Downstairs At The Tabernacle, Tabernacle Street, EC2, (020 7253 5555) 9pm to 2am, Saturdays. Bottled beer, £3.50. Cocktails, £6.50

Double Club
Without a doubt one of the hottest recent openings, the Double Club is a "pop-up" bar, club and restaurant in Islington, open for just six months. It's the brainchild of artist Carsten Holler and Miuccia Prada (yes, she of
the frocks herself) and attracts in-the-know fashionistas and arty types.
Don't let that any of that put you off, though. Pop along for some fizz and a dance and who knows which celeb you'll find perched on a stool next to you.
Torrens Street, EC1 (020 7837 2222, thedoubleclub.co.uk). 6pm-3am, Tues-Thurs; 6pm 4am, Fri-Sat. Beers, £7. Cocktails, £7.50

Word at Bar Music Hall
Eat, drink and chill in the early evening at Bar Music Hall, a former cabaret and rave venue, now a fab bar/club venue with a very cool crowd. Dress to impress — club kids hanging out here make a serious effort with off-the-wall outfits. But they're a friendly bunch, so leave your ego at the door and embrace your silly side at this Shoreditch gem. Get there early, as the queue is often immense.
Curtain Road, EC2, (020 7729 7216, barmusichall.com). 9pm-2am, second and fourth Sat of the month. Beers, from £3.20. Cocktails, £6.50

Free Fridays at Cargo
Punters are made up that one of the definitive Shoreditch venues, Cargo, is now letting clubbers through its doors free of charge on its busiest night of the week. Expect to hang out with an eclectic bunch of party animals here, with hot DJ line-ups and cheap drinks promotions to get you in the mood. It even serves cheap eats with its "street food" menu so you can refuel and dance on all night.
83 Rivington Street, EC2 (020 7739 3440 cargo-london.com). 6pm-3am, Fridays. Beers, £3.40. Cocktails, from £5

Saturday Sessions at The Ramshackle
No need to trek to town in the cold with free house/disco nights like this one near Putney Bridge. The long-standing music venue becomes a cocktail-fuelled boogie box on Saturdays. With room for up to 900 in its basement, VIP lounge and ground-floor bar, it's a veritable mini-superclub.
Fulham High Street, SW6 (020 7384 6400 theramshackle.co.uk). 9pm to late, Saturdays. Bottled beer, £3. Cocktails, £5.50

Breakin' Bread at The Social This West End institution deserves its reputation for great live music and club nights (and chilli con carne or fish fingers and mash, should you need sustenance). Each month it hosts hip hop and funk collective Breakin' Bread, who have a record label and radio shows as well as club nights all over the world.
Little Portland Street (020 7636 4992, the-social.com). 6pm-1am, first Fri of month. Beers, £3.10. Cocktails, £5.80

Free Fridays at 93 Feet East
This spacious club on Brick Lane normally charges about £7 entry. How kind of them to drop all the charges so you can go wild to see in the weekend without breaking the bank. Every Friday there will be live bands, DJs and a trendy crowd of east London sorts.
Brick Lane, E1 (020 7247 3293, 93feeteast.co.uk). 7pm-1am, Fridays. Bottled beer, from £3. Cocktails, £5
