What is DineMe? Meet the new food and drink focused dating app

Hoping to fall in love with someone who enjoys going to bars and restaurants as much you do? Joanna Taylor investigates a new app promising to facilitate just that

An optimistic soul once said that the key to a person’s heart is through their stomach, though I’m not entirely sure anyone has fallen in love while scoffing a tin of tuna over the kitchen sink – no matter how carefully you decant the brine.

Instead, it’s what’s prepared and shared with care (listen, if you have opened a tin of tuna and someone has declared their undying love for you, let me know) that usually tweaks our emotions. Yes, you could whisk up your carefully honed puttanesca and serve it up against a soundtrack of Khruangbin, but the crucial word here is prepare, because there are literally brigades of trained chefs capable of doing the legwork for you – freeing you up to sit back, relax and turn on the charm.

This is something that the founders of DineMe know all to well. Launching today, the new dating app aims to connect like-minded people through their love of exploring the UK's culinary scene, encouraging users to craft their ideal date based around a bar, restaurant or a broad cuisine and allowing others in the creator’s preferred gender, language, age and location selections to vie for a spot on it – and vice versa.

Those who choose to create a 'dine' (the creators' word for a proposed date) can select their preferred time, date, cuisine, place, conversation topics, and even who picks up the bill. For example, one might choose to post a 'dine' looking for a date to join them at Bar Termini next Friday at 7pm, with the aim of drinking cocktails, discussing politics and splitting the bill.

Or if you're not fussed about the nitty-gritty, users can simply choose the type of food or beverage they would like to consume (anything from coffee, to beer, pizza, African food or ice cream) and an establishment or area, and leave the rest up for discussion. When it comes to finding a match, what you can see on other users' profiles includes at least three photos, as well as their name, age, distance from your location, interests and whatever biography they may or may not choose to write.

Unlike other popular dating apps such as Hinge and Tinder, sections for height, work, education, sexuality, dating intentions, vaccination status, religious beliefs, pets, home location, and drug, alcohol and cigarette use are not available, which some many might find limiting.

To put it to the test, I’ve put out a ‘DineMe’ request seeking someone tall, dark and handsome to take me to The Ritz at 8pm on Friday to discuss nothing but the new Mean Girls movie. So far, no bites. But here’s hoping…

Dine me is available on the The App Store and Google Play now
