Healthy eaters are facing hefty increases in the cost of their avocados, according to a new report.

Trade magazine The Grocer has reported the price of avocados is set to soar due to high demand and lack of supply. Experts say that the sales of avocados are up by as much as 25 per cent since last year in the UK, thanks to the growing popularity of the food as a healthy toast topper and salad ingredient.

During this boom, however, avocado producers in the Mediterranean have been hit by El Nino - the weather pattern that causes adverse conditions such as colder winters - which has made production more difficult.

Sandra Kajda, category buyer for fruit and vegetable supplier Reynolds, told the magazine that demand was growing across the EU, US and Australia, as avocados became "more of a mainstream product".

She added that adverse weather means Mediterranean producers expect production to fall by 30 per cent this year, which could see prices hike further.

There is a silver lining, however, as it turns out you can now get more out of your avocado than just the green flesh.

It has been revealed this week by One Green Planet that eating the seed of your avocado is, in fact, good for you.

A report by the foodie website claims that an avocado stone contains 70 per cent of the fruit’s antioxidants. The seed has a soluble fiber that helps with digestion and reduces cholesterol levels, and oils that stimulate collagen production meaning a healthier heart and skin.

But don’t think you can just tuck into it with a knife and fork, they recommend you cut the seed into quarters and then put it into a blender to make a powder which you can add to your smoothies or sprinkle over your morning porridge.
