Diwali drinks: A recipe for a Pataka firecracker cocktail

The biggest and brightest of celebrations will happen across the country today as Diwali gets underway. The five-day festival, celebrated around the world by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains, honours Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and marks the new financial year in India.

Lights, lamps, fireworks, music, food, decorations will all be a major part of today's festivities, with with thousands attending Diwali lights switch-on events around the country.

But if you're planning to celebrate at home this year, East London-based Indian bar Chai Ki have shared their recipe for the Pataka (Hindi for firecracker) - a cocktail that packs a spicy punch and is guaranteed to add some fire to your feast.

Ingredients

Ceylon Arrack 50ml (infused with Masala Chai spices)

Blackberries, Raspberries & Strawberries (handful)

Lime (wedge)

Mint (sprig)

Method

  1. Add most of the berries and lime to a shot glass and muddle.
  2. Add the Ceylon Arrack and crushed ice.
  3. Shake well or churn with a spoon if you don’t have a cocktail shaker.
  4. Garnish with berries and mint.
  5. Serve with two short straws.
