'Illicit' London gin distillery re-opens its doors after more than 100 years

The gin company was once disguised as a local bakery in Enfield

An old gin distillery in London, dating back 120 years, is making its mark on the world of high-end alcohol.

The Old Bakery Gin distillery was set up by Ian Puddick just four months ago, after he stumbled across it by chance.

The 47-year-old owner of a leak-detection company was forced out of his previous offices due to maintenance works, leading him to purchase a small mews near Bounds Green, north London.

A building dispute over a chimney caused Mr Puddick to research the building's history, which is when he discovered that not only had the location been home to a bakery, but also an illicit gin distillery.

Intrigued by the history of his newly purchased property, he tracked down the descendants of the distillery company who gave him a vague recipe, which he has since refined to produce his own dry London gin.
