Jubilee macarons

Garish to the eye but a wonder to eat
1 May 2012

What: Jubilee macarons (£10/box of five)

Where from: Café On, 97 North Street, SW4 (oncafe.co.uk)

Taste assessment: These are garish to look at but a wonder to eat. The lid is light enough that the tongue can break it with one touch, while the cream underneath is light and smooth. These are not chewy as some traditional macarons can be, but fudgy in texture and topped with tiny little sugar sprinkles for a final crunch. Strawberry and vanilla was somewhat sickly but gorgeous to look at, with miniature hand painted roses on one side, while our favourite - blackcurrants with blueberry soaked vodka and wild blueberry puree - was fruity and light as a feather.
