Marmite is banning the word ‘bae’ from its personalised jars

Whether you love or hate spreading it on toast, you won’t be able to treat your Marmite-loving ‘bae’ to a jar of spread this Valentine’s Day.

The maker of the popular toast topper has banned Britain’s most cringe-worthy pet names from appearing on its iconic jars - including ‘bae’, ‘snookums’ and ‘baby cakes’.

Personalised Valentine’s Day jars can be ordered from the brand’s Facebook page, but it says it will not be taking orders featuring these loathsome terms of endearment which new research has proved are the most hated in the country.

Philippa Atkinson, Marmite Brand Manager, commented :“We’re delighted to launch our limited edition Valentine’s Day jars just in time for lovers to purchase for their ‘bae’. We appreciate that Marmite is a spread best enjoyed at breakfast, and nobody wants a side helping of nausea first thing in the morning, so thought it made perfect sense to ban the most hated pet names.

"Who knows, we may even be responsible for saving some relationships along the way…”

Valentine’s romancers will be able to choose between two limited edition ‘Pot of Love’ designs – one with the line “Will you be my Valentine?” and one declaring “Love me or hate me, I’m yours”.

But if you want to emblazon yours with a soppy nickname, it looks like you’ll have to stick to a good, old-fashioned ‘honey’ or ‘treacle’ instead.
