Morrisons launches 'flaming fiery phaal', an eight chilli-rated curry for £2

Morrisons has created an eight chilli-rated curry called the 'flaming fiery phaal' – an incredibly hot curry which contains 'scorpion' chillies.

The product was launched in response to complaints that the supermarket’s previous hottest curry – the volcanic vindaloo - was (according to one disgruntled customer, Paul McCourt, at least) “not hot enough by any standards”.

The supermarket says it searched the country to find the "hottest recipe possible". Their research led them to Birmingham’s Bangladeshi restaurants, home of the phaal, which is widely considered the fieriest curry in the world.

The scorpion chillies in it top the Scoville Heat Scale – which ranks how hot a chilli is – and it also contains Naga and green chillies.

Its eight chilli-rating makes it two tiers above the previous 'hottest' curry.

McCourt said: “I was surprised to hear back from Morrisons. You don’t expect a complaint like this to be listened to. I’m a big spice fan and always enjoy a challenge, however the Volcanic Vindaloo wasn’t hot enough for me. Although I’ve been made to eat my words after tasting the Flaming Fiery Phaal!”

The curry, which costs £2, is now available nationwide.
