Whether you are low on groceries or in need of quick carb fix, pasta is the food that always seems to do the trick. But what if you could make the pasta you cook at home even tastier?

Scientists say they have perfected the technique for a flawless pot of pasta, according to a YouTube video posted by the American Chemical Society. Turns out, the tips and tricks are not too far off from the traditional technique.

1. Olive oil is a waste

Some people swear by adding olive oil to their pasta during cooking, but the scientists say that this is a complete waste of your time and money.

As soon as you drain your pasta, all the olive oil goes down the drain, adding no real effect to the taste of your pasta.

2. Don't be salt shy

The age-old trick of adding salt to pasta really does enhance the flavour, the scientists say.

"If you were to enter a food competition without salt, you wouldn't last very long", consultant Kyle Nackers says in the video.

3. Add pasta water to the sauce

If you want to make your sauce extra tasty, a ladle of salty water usually enhances flavour and gives a stickier texture to the noodles.

4. Don't rinse your pasta

If you want a flavourful and moreish bowl of spaghetti, don't put your colander of pasta under the tap. The water will rinse off the sticky and delicious starch that allows sauce to coat the noodles.
