The Olympic best: brownies

Forget Kendal Mint Cake: the top fuel to power yourself around town by bike or on foot during the Games has to be the brownie. After an extensive taste test, we present the five best brownies in town.

1. Gail’s Bakery, chocolate and pecan

The London chain makes a divine brownie: moist, chewy and with pecans on top. So good you’ll want to make space for a second. (£2.80, 020 7625 0068, gailsbread.co.uk)

2. Konditor & Cook, curly whirly

The German baker’s unfortunately named Fudgepacker was also a hit, but its curly whirly proved most popular, thanks to a moreish vanilla and cream cheese topping. Chewy in the middle but crunchy on top. (£2.30, 0808 141 1101, konditorandcook.com)

3. Outsider Tart, snickers

The Chiswick High Road baker uses a peanut butter chocolate batter and tops the brownies with salted peanut caramel. One taster described them as “unbelievably good. Trashy in the best possible way”. (£2.50, 020 7096 1609, outsidertart.com)

4. St John Bakery, nut

London’s gooeyist brownies (with blanched hazelnut and almonds) come from the Fergus Henderson-run bakery. So rich you’ll only need a few bites. (£2.50, 020 7237 5999 stjohnbakerycompany.com)

5. Lantana, blondie

Fitzrovia café Lantana stocks London’s top blondie. Fudgy and glorious, they were devoured in seconds. (£1.80, 020 7637 3347, lantanacafe.co.uk)
