The no nonsense one

People come to the Garrison pub just for the fish finger sandwiches. The cod is battered in a lovely light herb tempura and sandwiched between thick white bloomer bread. A winning formula.

The classic

Nestling between two slices of thick white bread are homemade haddock fritters drizzled in pea pesto and mayonnaise, with Cos lettuce on top and a side of French fries. It’s a classic combination of fish fingers and peas – done well.

The wrap

At Leon, they wrap fish fingers in a flatbread and add in a smattering of salad leaves, a juicy gherkin and herby tartare sauce. It’s a twist on the classic sandwich except the crunchy cod fingers are miles better than Captain Birdseye’s.

The grown-up sandwich

Made with crusty white bread and fresh flaky cod, Smith’s of Smithfield sell around 500 of these sandwiches on good weeks. It’s all down to the balance of fish to breadcrumbs, tartare sauce and salad - the fish doesn’t get lost in the mix.

The hangover sarnie

With fish fingers this chunky, it’s difficult to eat this sandwich elegantly. The haddock is battered, complemented by tartare sauce and a generous helping of gherkins. Root vegetable crisps served on the side are also salty and delicious. Follow it up with one of 14 speciality beers, lagers and ciders.
