Vegan haggis: Tesco is now selling a meat free haggis for Burns Night

Burns night is held each year on January 25 to celebrate the life of poet Robert Burns – and Haggis is traditionally served as the main meal.

The national dish of Scotland is generally composed of the liver, heart and lungs of a sheep, minced with mutton or sheep suet and combined with onion, spices and oatmeal all encased and boiled in a sheep’s stomach. Not exactly the most appetising meal but a Scottish delicacy nonetheless.

Now, vegans can have the option to indulge in haggis too – of the plant-based variety.

Tesco have just launched a vegan haggis by Edinburgh-based company Macsween that replaces traditional haggis fillings with nuts, oats, beans and vegetables.

According to Macsween, Tesco isn’t the only supermarket where the vegan version is available, as it is also stocked in Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Co-op.

Of course, not everyone is happy about the meat-free edition. Douglas Scott, chief executive at the Scottish Federation of Meat Traders told the Telegraph that the vegan haggis would make Burns ‘scoff’.

Scott continued: "Robert Burns enjoyed haggis so much that he stood up and competed an address to it. If you listen to this, he gives the impression that its going to give you power and strength. That is not the impression you get from the vegan haggis.”

However, Tesco Scottish food buyer told the publication that the demand for the vegan haggis was unprecedented and not just for Burns night but year-round.

Whether you’re meat-free or not, I think we can all agree that the plant-based version does sound more appealing …
