What your choice of office snack really says about you

Snack snobs wouldn't be caught dead with a McFlurry in hand, says Susannah Butter
Are you part of the poshcorn posse?

The crisp-eater is becoming a rare breed. The amount spent annually on regular crisps in the UK is falling, from £1.39bn in 2013 to an estimated £1.34 billion in 2015, according to Mintel research. Instead we are eating “event chips” — blue corn tortilla, anyone? — and popcorn, sales of which are up from £50 million in 2010 to £129 million in 2015. What does your desk snack say about you?

A grab-bag of Space Invaders

You don’t care that the rustle of you posting carbs into your mouth is unprofessional and no longer on trend — it’s 10.30am, you’re hungover and you need greasy sustenance, fast.

Skinny yoghurt-topped rice cakes

Watching your weight is confusing. Buying something with skinny in the name will surely help you fit into your leather trousers, even though they are still called cakes and the crumbs stick in your keyboard. Then a colleague tells you that they contain 486 calories and 22.6g of fat per 100g. You buy a bag of Maltesers to cheer yourself up.

A Bounce ball

You don’t understand why being called an Alpha Girl is an insult. Since January 1 you have gone to spin class at 6.30am each day and you want everyone to know. You look forward to 3pm, when guru Gwyneth Paltrow says you can have half an almond, and snap at deskmates when they mock you. You are craving a Mars bar.

Brazil nut butter on a square of gluten-free rye bread and an apple

Healthy food can be fun, as you tell the kids. This is just as delicious as peanut butter and it will help you drop the stone you put on during maternity leave while giving you energy because the baby was up all night. Maybe you just need to eat one more slice.

A McFlurry

Ostensibly you have a boss but you are still in charge. You are a maverick who turns up at the desk when you like and makes your job work for you. Then you steal a banana from your colleague’s desk, they were annoying you anyway.
