An Australian sirloin steak has been named the best in the world, defeating cuts from Europe, Japan, and the Americas.

A wagyu crossed with black angus entry, from producer Jack’s Creek, wowed judges at the annual World Steak Challenge which was held on Monday night.

Jack’s Creek cattle are bred and raised around rural Willow Tree in New South Wales and are “finished” on a mixture of grains, hay and silage. The winning sirloin is the third win for the farm in the nine years the competition has run, having also earned the top award in 2015 and 2016.

Creek's steak was created by David and Patrick Warmoll in 1991, when the duo crossed Tajima wagyu bulls, known for high marbling, over an Angus herd, famous for flavour and tenderness. The family have been involved in the meat industry since arriving in Australia from Ireland in 1852 and began farming in 1947.

Jack’s Creek now sells beef to more than 20 countries around the world, including the UK. A single 250g rib-eye steak from the brand can be found at Harrods for upwards of £75, while the meat supplier Tom Hixon of Smithfield has a listing of this year’s winning steak on its website: a 6kg wagyu sirloin cut for £800.

The World Steak Challenge has become a popular benchmark for beef competitions around the world and is backed by an independent judging panel of 50 industry professionals. All look for juicy, flavourful beef.

The winners were crowned at a dinner at Smith & Wollensky in London, where Restaurant magazine editor and judge Stefan Chomka said: “This year’s competition saw the highest standard of entries yet, with a record number of gold entries, but one particular steak stood out from the pack.

“Congratulations to Jack’s Creek for its outstanding steak and to all the winners in the other categories. The global nature of this competition and the high quality of entrants demonstrates a true desire across the world to produce top-quality cuts of steak that are testament to the hard work that goes into beef production.”

Other judges based in the UK included Paul Foster, chef-patron of steak restaurant GrassFed in Camden, and Ioannis Grammenos, executive chef at Heliot Steakhouse at the Hippodrome Casino in Soho
