Glorious Twelfth is here again, marking the start of the grouse shooting season. Whether you agree with the practice or not, it's hard to deny that grouse, with its tender, gamey flavour, makes for an excellent meal. The meat is flavoursome enough that very little needs to be done to it: for the most part, roasting will do the trick. London's restaurants offer ample oppurtunity to tuck in to this rich-tasting bird. Enjoy.

Bluebird

This glamorous King’s Road staple is serving grouse from the get-go on the glorious twelfth for £25.50 a pop, with traditional accompaniments included.

Find it: 350 King's Road, SW3 5UU; bluebird-restaurant.co.uk http://www.bluebird-restaurant.co.uk/

Tom’s Kitchen

The marina-side branch of Tom Aikens’ restaurant group at St Katharine Docks is serving whole roast grouse for two with pâté en croûte, game jus, game chips and bread sauce. It will be carved at the table and costs £40 per two people.

Find it: St Katharine Docks, E1W 1AZ; tomskitchen.co.uk

New Street Grill

The City’s New Street Grill will serve whole roast red grouse, served with game chips, baby carrots, bread sauce, black pudding and red wine jus.

Find it: 16a New Street, EC2M 4TR; newstreetgrill.co.uk

Rules

Where better for a meal as traditional as grouse than one of London’s oldest restaurants. Rules in Covent Garden was founded by Thomas Rule back in 1798, and probably served a very similar dish of grouse on the glorious twelfth back then to it does now. Red grouse will be served, along with other game, for the duration of the season.

Find it: 35 Maiden Lane, WC2E 7LB; rules.co.uk
