£30 breakfast 'taking the Ritz'

You'll need to dig deep to afford breakfast at The Ritz.

A cooked breakfast at London's top hotels has broken the £30-a-head barrier, a survey says today.

At The Ritz, Piccadilly, a "full English" for two is £60, as much as dinner with wine in many London restaurants.

The menu lists a selection from fruit, cereal and meats followed by "two eggs cooked to your choice, served with back bacon or honey roast ham, with sausage or black pudding, grilled mushrooms or black pudding, grilled mushrooms and vine tomatoes."

Omelette or kippers are also offered. A spokeswoman said top-quality ingredients justified the prices.

Caterer And Hotelkeeper magazine also found most of London's top hotels exclude breakfast from the room rate and most add service.

At Pellicci's café, Bethnal Green, Nevio Pellici said: "We sell sausage, egg, bacon, fried tomatoes and a fried slice for £4.40. Ours is just the same as theirs.

"I wouldn't pay £30 for a breakfast, would you?"
