Tomos Parry’s Shoreditch restaurant Brat has been named as the London Restaurant of the Year for 2020 by restaurant guide SquareMeal.

The Basque-inspired restaurant – which also holds a Michelin star – leap-frogged last year’s winner Core by Clare Smyth to rise from second place to the top spot in the guide’s list of the top 100 restaurants in the capital.

“I really admire the past winners of SquareMeal’s Restaurant of the Year and I’m grateful to join them,” said chef Parry, who was previously lauded for his work at Kitty Fisher's in Mayfair. “It’s a special thing for all of us at Brat: to win an award that reflects both critic and diner opinion is really exciting. It shows that our guests appreciate what we’re doing.”

The rankings are compiled by considering readers’ votes in SquareMeal’s annual surveys, page views for restaurants on the website and the thoughts of the guide’s in-house critics.

“We’ve been big fans of Tomos Parry ever since he was at Kitty Fisher’s but Brat has surpassed our expectations,” said SquareMeal editor Ben McCormack.

“Not only does the signature dish of whole turbot deserve to be on any foodie’s bucket list but the open kitchen and communal style of seating and eating serve as a potent reminder that food nourishes the soul as much as the stomach when shared among friends.”

Elsewhere on the list, two new openings entered the rankings with spots in the top 10, with Jackson Boxer’s seafood restaurant Orasay placing eighth – making it London's best new restaurant. Rambunctious Italian restaurant Gloria came in behind it at number nine.

The pair were followed by another twelve additions to the list. These were Imperial Treasure (29), Xier (50), Bob Bob Cité (62), No. Fifty Cheyne (66), Arros QD (70), Da Terra (74), Wild Honey St James (82), Flor (87), Kutir (89), Decimo (94), Kanishka (97) and Circolo Popolare (100).

SquareMeal isn't the only publication to reveal their restaurants of the year this week. OpenTable named Core by Clare Smyth as the UK's best, followed by The Ledbury, The Five Fields, and Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, with Clapham's Trinity rounding out the top five.
