Charles all set to be King Cone

Ice cream lovers will be tucking into a "King Cone" with a difference this summer, as Prince Charles launches his own range of luxury organic ices.

He plans to produce high-quality Cornish ice creams to go head-to-head with the likes of Ben & Jerry's and Haagen Dazs.

But do not expect to see the flavours given jokey names, like Vanilla Camilla, to rival Ben & Jerry's Chunky Monkey or Cherry Garcia. The Prince's Duchy Originals food company is expected to stick with more sober labels for its lemon curd, chocolate, strawberries-and-cream and vanilla flavours.

The varieties are going through rigorous taste-testing before being presented to Charles for the final seal of royal approval. If all goes to plan, they will hit supermarket shelves in July, during the Golden Jubilee celebrations.

"We hope this will be one of our biggest-selling ranges," said a Duchy Originals spokeswoman. "The Prince is very enthusiastic to support the establishment of more organic food production across the country."

Although the Home Farm dairy herd on the Prince's Highgrove Estate will not be contributing, the ingredients will come from other farms in the West Country, reflecting his enthusiasm for supporting local agriculture. As with the oatmeal biscuits, sausages, milk and other goods in the small Duchy Originals range, all profits will go to charity.

Charles has teamed up on the project with Britain's biggest ice cream producer, Richmond Foods, better known for Fab and Mivvi lollies. Sales teams are negotiating with supermarkets to stock the half-litre tubs. Duchy Originals already sells its fare at Waitrose, Sainsbury's and Tesco, while Richmond has strong ties with most of the main chains.

Lauren Nola, UK marketing manager at the typically undeferential Ben & Jerry's said of the Prince's plans: "Good for him, if he can't be king, at least he can be dairy queen. As Americans, we are looking forward to mingling with the royals." The Prince established Duchy Originals 10 years ago to support Britain's fledgling organic movement. Profits go to causes supported by the Prince of Wales Charitable Foundation.
