The country's top chefs share their New Year's resolutions for 2020

Another year, a new decade: just like starting over.

After an extended indulgence – purely for contrast, of course – it's time to begin afresh, improve ourselves, get better, to make use of all those good intentions that come with the nervy sickness of a hangover.

The country's chefs are no different. Here, 19 of the UK's top talents have shared their resolutions for the New Year, from old stalwarts – go to the gym more, drink less – to quitting some more unusual vices (see Scott Paton of Plymouth's Boringdon Hall, determined to get clean... from a crippling jelly bean addiction).

Below are five of our favourite resolutions for the new year, but flick through the gallery above for the optimistic objectives fuelling some of the country's top kitchens.

Jackson Boxer, Orasay

"In 2020, I'm resolved to: 1) No more openings; 2) more time with children; 3) be better at pastry; 4) read more fiction; 5) write more nonsense. But most importantly, my determination for this year is to be kind, in all things, at all times."

Monica Galetti, Mere

"My resolutions are to: 1) Spend at least two or three evenings a week with my 13-year-old daughter; 2) eat fewer chilli Doritos; 3) get back on my A-game with karaoke. I got bashed by my siblings over Christmas (I’m way out of practice) but my mic drop after an Elvis song with my French father-in-law was lit!"

Henry Harris, Harcourt Inns

"My resolutions for the New Year ahead are to not eat badly made bread, have a glass of Calvados once a week and to cycle the Camino de Santiago, starting in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port – that’s 800km so I should be able to do it in a week or 10 days leisurely pace."

Adam Handling, Adam Handling restaurants

"My New Year's resolutions are to try to remember everyone's name... Go to the gym, be vegan one day a week, and stop drinking so much wine... Basically, to start to look after myself before I die of a heart attack – so only eat cheese donuts once a week, not every day!"

Paul Ainsworth, Paul Ainsworth restaurants

"For me, a New Year’s resolution for 2020 will be to live a little bit more in the now, and really enjoy each day –rather than always looking at tomorrow. It’s being said more and more that a work life balance is key, so I’m really going to enjoy spending lots of time with my family this year.”
