David Sexton's week in food: from a mixed grill to cold roast chicken

David Sexton details his food from a week where far more important things were going on
Perfect meal: cold roast chicken with salad

Not really a fancy food week. On Thursday evening, needing comfort, a mixed grill from our beloved local, Gokyuzu, on Harringay’s Grand Parade, always a sure thing.

On Friday we went at dawn to wonderful UCLH, where, at 10am, our baby was born. He ended up in the neo-natal unit and we weren’t reunited until mid-afternoon. Finally able to eat, I wolfed down a sandwich of ancient bread from the local store and sheepy Greek cheese that Catherine had somehow made for me before we set off.

A weekend of sandwiches on the ward. Was the spicy artisanal number, £4.50 from Honey & Co in Warren Street, any better than all the Pret stand-bys? Maybe. Not that it matters.

On Sunday evening, we made it home, all three: chicken roasted with tarragon says home to me.

On Monday, with the door open to the garden and the sun, the other half of the chicken cold, with salad and a glass of wine. Perhaps the best meal ever. We talk about calling him Laurie — more after Laurus nobilis than Laurie Lee.
