London’s love of food halls is set for a shot in the arm, as the Italian colossus Eataly has confirmed it will initially open next to Liverpool Street on the morning of April 29, followed by a full launch from May 20.

The 42,000 square foot site is billed as the “UK's largest Italian food emporium” and promises a celebration of the country’s best food and drink, with a butcher, fishmonger, cured meat counter, bakery and “cheese laboratory” all inside. In total, more than 5,000 Italian food and drink products will be available, and the opening will include London’s largest Italian wine cellar, with more than 2,000 bottles available. No surprise a coffee bar will also feature.

The soft opening will see Eataly’s market and retail areas open, as well as outlets offering take-away and its outdoor dining space, La Terrazza di Eataly. This terrace will be one of two planned; there will also be three restaurants, three bars, six smaller food spots, dubbed “eateries”, and a cooking school. Bookings for the terrace, which will serve food and cocktails from the Aperol Spritzeria, can be made from today.

Eataly’s two indoor restaurants, Cucina del Mercato and Pasta e Pizza, will open their doors on May 20, as well as the in-store bars, and seating areas around the other eateries. Meanwhile, Terra, the finer dining destination within the site, is due to officially launch later in September.

Eataly CEO, Nicola Farinetti, said of the launch: “We are delighted to finally open our Eataly London doors to bring our love of Italian gastronomy to the UK at a time when consumers and hospitality professionals appreciate and need it the most.

“Eataly was founded with a vision to bring the biodiversity, craft and different layers of culinary experiences of Italy together under one roof, under our motto of ‘Eat, Shop, Learn’.

“Togetherness is at the heart of our brand and, while we will adhere to and implement all the necessary safety measures, we cannot wait to meet our new locals and celebrate passionate artisans and high-quality food in a dynamic and culturally diverse reality such as London.”

The announcement is a long time coming, with Eataly – a portmanteau of Eat and Italy – first announcing plans to move into London as far back as late 2017. The move follows the brand’s enormous global success, with London becoming the 43rd Eataly and the UK the 16th country the group have sites in.
