Gastropub and cinema

10 April 2012

The Garrison may be unique in that it is a gastropub that opened on a site that was formerly ... a gastropub! This place was previously The Honest Cabbage before it was reborn under new management as The Garrison.

There is now a row of cramped banquettes plus some tall counters with bar stools.

It's a lively place and the menu divides into three sections - good-value bar snacks such as Welsh rarebit or whitebait, a brunch menu at the weekends, and the pukka menu, which is short and to the point.

You'll get to pick from four starters (unless you import a fish finger sarnie from the bar snacks list) and half a dozen mains.

They will probably be fairly ambitious dishes like seared foie gras, roasted mango brioche and aged balsamic; shellfish bisque, crab and tarragon wonton; or a game terrine with toast and pickles.

But you could also look under the heading 'salads' - feta with spiced breadcrumbs, or Gorgonzola, pear, pink grapefruit and chicory.

Mains are equally sophisticated - grilled bream, roast fennel, ratatouille dressing; roast magret of duck, spiced apricot, shallot and thyme jus, fondant potato; or twice-baked goats' cheese soufflé, shallot and Parmesan cream.

For pud there is a cheeseboard (from Neal's Yard); sticky toffee pudding; chocolate fudge brownie with crème fraiche; and rather good home-made ice creams - the caramel ice cream gets three stars as does the malted milk, with the white peach sorbet getting an honourable two stars.
