Get lunch for 1p in Covent Garden today

Spend a penny in Covent Garden this lunchtime

No lunch plans? Got a penny?

Well if you’re anywhere near Covent Garden (or in reach of it) then you're in luck.

To mark its opening today The Black Penny Coffee House on Great Queen Street is offering lunches for just 1p.

The café, which launched this morning, specialises in vibrant-looking salads made with British seasonal ingredients, as well as speciality coffees.

The 1p offer applies to all of its lunch counter dishes today – including the stone bass ceviche, carrot, fennel and radish salad above – and lasts until everything’s gone.

It’s strictly one dish per person though, so don’t hand over a pound and expect to clear the shelves.

The gimmick references the new café’s name, which was inspired by the coffee houses of the 17th Century that were known as Penny Universities as a penny would buy a cup of coffee and admission to the venue, which also served as a place to discuss and debate intelligent matters such as politics or poetry.

To Covent Garden, and don’t hold the tube carriages.
