Giving up his Sunday: chef George Barson

Top Mayfair restaurant Kitty Fisher’s is to serve a traditional Sunday roast for the first time as part of London Food Month.

New head chef George Barson, formerly of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s Devon-based River Cottage, Jamie Oliver’s 15 in Old Street and Heston Blumenthal’s two Michelin-starred Dinner in Mayfair, is this Sunday giving up his “day of rest” to cook an intimate “quintessential” roast for guests.

The £60-a-head event, called Sunday Lunch Beefy Good Times, will start with sausage rolls made from black pudding, devilled shrimps and chunks of fresh bread. For the main course, cuts of Welsh Wagyu beef, beef rib and beef short rib will be served on boards placed in the centre of the table so diners can “tuck in and help themselves.”

The meat will be served with the restaurant’s famous crispy potatoes — thinly sliced potato cooked in butter and pressed before being deep-fried — plus gravy and all the other trimmings.

Pudding will be a “version of strawberries and cream” including a wild strawberry compote made from fruit picked from Barson’s Islington balcony, vanilla ice cream with honey and meringue pieces, followed by a cheese board. “I am hoping everyone leaves quite nice and full,” said Barson, 33.

There will be two sittings in the tiny 35-cover restaurant, frequented by chef Nigella Lawson, socialite Donna Air and David and Samantha Cameron. Barson said the Sunday roast meant a lot to him as his grandfather Tom used to make roast duck for the two of them.
