Just because you're heading towards your overdraft doesn't mean you have to avoid eating out — sometimes it's cheaper than the cinema.

Dindin Kitchen

What: Persian fast food, so tasty wraps, little pots of meze and salads. It's only open until 9pm but you can squeeze in a quick post-work supper of our favourite: the chicken skewers marinated in a tasty mix of yoghurt, lime and saffron (£6.75), alongside some tabbouleh and aubergine.

Price: Wraps from £3.50 and meze pots from £1.50.

Where: 52 Gray's Inn Road, WC1X 8LT; dindinkitchen.com

Chicken Shop/Dirty Burger Whitechapel

What: Recognising that it was impossible sometimes to choose between rotisserie chicken and a burger, the Soho House group did the honourable thing and opened a Chicken Shop/Dirty Burger hybrid on Mile End Road. Poultry or beef, it's hard to spend a lot here, although it's worth delving into the cocktail list.

Price: Quarter of a chicken at £4.50 and burgers from £5.50.

Where: 27a Mile End Road, E1 4TP; chickenshop.com/whitechapel

Flat Iron

What: This cheap-as-chips steak joint has opened a second Soho outpost with 60 covers and all the same formula: steak (sourced from North Yorkshire) for a tenner, plus the option to splash out a further £2.50 on dripping cooked chips.

Price: Steak and salad for £10.

Where: 9 Denmark Street, WC2H 8LS; flatironsteak.co.uk

Pizza Pilgrims Friggitoria

What: First it was a van, then a restaurant on Dean Street and now the Pizza Pilgrims boys have opened a pizzeria-cum-frigattoria in new foodie hotspot Kingly Court. Order some porchetta and ricotta pizza fritta (£5.50) for deep-fried calzone goodness.

Price: Pizzas from £5, an ice-cold Sohocello shot is £3.50.

Where: 11 Kingly Street, W1B 5PW; pizzapilgrims.co.uk

21 Bateman Street

What: A new Greek cafe-restaurant in the middle of Soho specialising in souvlaki (skewers) and run by old friends. Lamb souvlaki are best ordered in mini sharing portions as you can try out a few with a mate (lamb with yellow mustard sauce is recommended), while the thick and creamy Greek yoghurt is homemade in northern Greece and comes with honey or fruit jams.

Price: Skewers are £3.20 and wraps are £5.20.

Where: 21 Bateman Street, W1D 3AL; 21batemanstreet.co.uk

DF/Mexico

What: A very permanent-seeming pop-up in Shoreditch's Truman Brewery which has "bloody good" Mexican grub according to our critic, Grace Dent — if you can see past the annoying self-service. Try the chicken tacos, oozing with a habanero and pumpkin seed mayo (£8 with a side) or the steak with chilli salt fries (£10.45). The dulche de leche with popping candy ice cream is mandatory (£2.75).

Price: House burritos, tacos and tortas from £5.95.

Where: Old Truman Brewery, Hanbury Street, E1, dfmexico.co.uk

Bleecker Street Burger

What: Okay, so it's not technically a restaurant, but Bleecker Street makes such tasty burgers we're willing to pretend its plot at Old Spitalfields Market is one. Get in line for a double cheeseburger (£8.50) and some sweet fries — we've got no idea what they put in that sauce but it's damn tasty.

Price: Burgers from £5.50.

Where: Wed-Sat until 8pm at Old Spitalfields Market, 65A Brushfield Street, E1 6AA; bleeckerburger.co.uk

United Ramen:

What: London is enjoying a second wave of ramen joints and Upper Street's 'UR' is riding at the crest with its mash-up of traditional flavours and modern interpretations. Stick to Japanese with the Chashu Pork Shoryu Ramen (£9) or go Korean with the Spicy Salmon & Kimchi Ramen (£9).

Price: Ramen from £7, rice dishes from £6.50.

Where: 105 Upper Street, N1 1QN

Yard Sale Pizza

What: Part take-away part miniature restaurant, Yard Sale has changed the pizza landscape of Clapton. If you stick to the 12inchers (more than enough for one person) you're well under the price limit. Order either the Holy Pepperoni (£10) and go £2 over budget to have some Caramel Crunch ice cream for pud.

Price: 12" pizzas from £7.50.

Where: 105 Lower Clapton Road, E5 0NP; yardsalepizza.com

COMING SOON

Burger Bear

What: We're promised 'burgers, disco and good times' at this Kickstarted restaurant, which opens soon in Old Street (for now check @BurgerBear to get your fix). All the patties come with bear-themed names like the 'Angry Bear' (£7.50) — a cheeseburger with helluvapino relish and Ribman #HolyFuck hot sauce — or the Koala Bear for veggies (£7.50), a spiced bean burger with American cheese, avocado, salsa and coriander and lime yoghurt

Price: Burgers from £6 (go over budget if you want to try the 'Triple Threat' for £15)

Where: 288-299, Old Street, EC1V 9LA; burgerbearuk.co.uk
