Loud City Thai for loud City types

10 April 2012

It is claimed (admittedly mainly by PRs) that this is Europe's largest Thai restaurant, but it may well be true.

In a vast room decorated with temple bells, Buddhas, pots, carved panels, teak, wooden flowers and gold-mosaic rooftop dragons, friendly staff greet customers with a genuine smile.

Downstairs there's a 100-seater cocktail bar with a 16.00-19.00 happy hour.

On Thursday and Friday the basement turns into a club with a 02.00 drink and dancing licence.

The lengthy menu lists both familiar favourites and more novel ideas.

Toong thong is a dish of minced prawn and chicken in purse-like little sacks, and very moreish.

Tod man poo, or Thai crab cakes, will satisfy connoisseurs seeking this favourite, and tom yam kung will delight lovers of the classic lemongrass soup.

Moo ping, or barbecued pork served with a sweet and incredibly hot sauce, is tender and good.

The menu suggests that it's especially good with sticky rice, and it is.

Six Thai curries offer a choice of red or green and different main ingredients.

There are the classic noodle dishes like pad Thai.

Other treats include Chu-chee lobster, which is deep-fried lobster with special curry paste, coconut milk and lime leaves.

Puddings include banana with coconut syrup and sesame seeds; Thai egg custard; and ice creams and sorbets.

The wine list starts gently, threads its way through some decent choices at the accessible verging on expensive mark, and then rockets to cosset City boys with show-off bottles like a Château Cheval Blanc St Emilion.
