Three London restaurants have been announced as new holders of Michelin’s Bib Gourmand awards, the highest accolade given by the restaurant guide other than its famous stars.

Berenjak in Soho, Two Lights in Shoreditch and Bancone in Covent Garden have all been named in the new list, which awards restaurants that provide exceptional value for money. The full UK and Ireland guide for 2020 including restaurants that have earned Michelin stars – are to be announced this evening.

Iranian restaurant Berenjak was praised by Michelin for its “modern Persian cooking” in “small but perfectly formed” surroundings. It is the third entry on the list for the JKS Restaurants group, which also own Bib Gourmand holders Hoppers and Bao.

On Twitter, the Michelin guide also called Hackney restaurant Two Lights “a fun neighbourhood spot in lucky Shoreditch” serving “creative and playful modern American dishes”, while “lively pasta bar” Bancone was hailed for “freshly made pasta at great prices”.

A selection of London restaurants have lost their Bib Gourmand awards this year. These include Indian Essence in Bromley, Barrica in Fitzrovia, and Copita in Soho. Bistro Union, Polpetto, Legs, Bellanger and Picture Fitzrovia have also been removed from the list due to closure. The Frog Hoxton has also lost its Bib Gourmand, but Adam Handling’s restaurant has been hotly tipped to earn a Michelin star at next week’s ceremony.

The full list numbers a total of 36 London restaurants with Bib Gourmand’s, a drop in overall awards from the 2019 guide’s 42. Favourites which maintain their spot on the list include Thai restaurant Kiln, which was given the top accolade at the National Restaurant Awards in 2018, Jerusalem-inspired hit The Palomar, Peckham restaurant Kudu and St John Bread and Wine, the sibling restaurant of Michelin-starred St John.
