Michelin Guide 2019 announces London’s new Bib Gourmand winners

This morning, the Michelin Guide commended four new London restaurants as Bib Gourmands.

Named for the Michelin Man himself – Bibendum – the awards honour restaurants typically thought of as neighbourhood spots, which offer more casual dining than places usually considered for a star.

“Prices and value for money are important, but the Bib Gourmand is about much more; it’s about the ethos and philosophy of a restaurant,” said Rebecca Burr, Michelin's Great Britain and Ireland Director.

The four new Bibs are below.

Petit Pois, Hoxton, chosen as "a cosy bistro serving French food with bags of flavour"

Kudu, Peckham, which passed muster for its "dishes inspired by its chef’s South African roots" and picked up the award just eight months after opening.

Farang, Highbury, which was praised for being "passionately run"

Sorella, Clapham, singled out as a "superb" spot "bring[ing] the Amalfi coast to Clapham"

“The four new London additions do not just show how wonderfully varied the restaurant scene is but also shine a light on different neighbourhoods,” Michelin announced today.

They four are among London's now 42-strong list of Bib Gourmands; last year saw 10 added, including Mayfair’s Kiln, Soho’s Kricket and Shoreditch's Gunpowder.

Among this year's list was Adam Handling's The Frog Hoxton, which technically didn't exist last year: at the time of the 2018 guide, it was known as the Frog E1 has since changed both its name and its site, from Ely's Yard to Hoxton Square.

London did take a hit, though, with 13 previous Bib winners losing the accolade. Two of these, Paradise Garage and the much loved Taberna do Mercado, have shut their doors during the past year, hence their deletion. Of the other 11, Gunpowder sister site Madame D lost its Bib after only being awarded it last year. Other surprise losses upmarket gastropub the Drapers Arms, in Islington, and Alex Wrethman's Charlotte's W5. However, losing a Bib can also indicate that Michelin is planning to upgrade a site: Fitzrovia's popular Clipstone may well not be disappointed today after losing theirs a mere 12 months after earning it, as it's rumoured they're in the running for their first star this year. The same may be true for Honey & Smoke.

Michelin announce their starred restaurants on Monday October 1 at Waterloo’s BFI IMAX cinema.
