Moor Hall in Lancashire has been named the best restaurant in the country at this evening’s National Restaurant Awards – but London restaurants complete the top five.

Tomos Parry’s Shoreditch restaurant Brat was named in second place in the list of 100 best UK restaurants, following the Grade II-listed restaurant with rooms in Aughton, which claimed the top spot. Hackney Wick restaurant Cornerstone was named in third, two Michelin-starred Core by Clare Smyth in fourth and Nieves Barragan Mohacho’s Sabor in fifth.

Monica Galetti’s restaurant Mere was placed in seventh (after Simon Rogan’s L’Enclume in Cartmel), followed by Claude Bosi at Bibendum in eighth. Ninth place went to Welsh restaurant Ynyshir, while Notting Hill spot The Ledbury rounded out the top 10.

Last year’s winner Kiln is placed in this year’s ranking at 15th.

A total of 54 London restaurants are featured in the list of 100, including both of Andrew Wong’s restaurants A Wong and Kym’s, and Hedone, the Michelin-starred Chiswick restaurant which closed last weekend (June 8).

The capital also made a splash among the other awards, with Italian restaurant Emilia being named One To Watch, and Clare Smyth named Chef of the Year. Wine List of the Year was won by Ollie Dabbous’s Hide, while Cocktail List of the Year was awarded to Frog by Adam Handling. Claude Bosi at Bibendum was given the Service award, The Harwood Arms’s Sally Abe was named Chef To Watch, and executive chef of The Ritz John Williams was presented with the Lifetime Achievement award.

Moor Hall is overseen by chef patron Mark Birchall, having been bought by Andy and Tracey Bell in 2015 and given a multi-million pound renovation. The restaurant focuses on British cuisine and cooks largely with produce grown on its five acre estate.

It is not the first time in 2019 that a lesser-known restaurant has claimed the top spot at a major awards ceremony. In February, South African restaurant Wolfgat was named the best in the world at the World Restaurant Awards. Popular London spot Noble Rot, which won “Red Wine-Serving Restaurant” at the WRA was named at in 28th place on the National Restaurant Awards list.

The National Restaurant Awards’s list, which is published by Restaurant magazine, is voted on by 200 industry experts who vote on their best restaurant experiences across the British Isles in the last year.
