West End dining tycoon Richard Caring is to open an Italian restaurant across the road from Harrods, inspired by Harry’s Bar in Venice.

Harry’s Dolci will be on Basil Street, opposite the back entrance to the department store, in what was once a branch of Cafe Rouge. It is the first new Italian restaurant to be opened by Mr Caring, the owner of The Ivy, Sexy Fish and Annabel’s nightclub.

The interiors are designed to summon the spirit of the La Dolce Vita period in Italy after the Second World War.

The restaurant will feature a grappa trolley and a dessert menu including Italian classics such as cannoli, tiramisu and panna cotta. Specialities will include spigola al cartoccio — whole sea bass baked in a paper bag with fennel, rosemary and Amalfi lemon.

Mr Caring, who is of Italian heritage on his father’s side, already runs a London version of Harry’s Bar in Mayfair, but the venue is a private members’ club not open to the public.

His Caprice Holdings restaurant group also includes Italian venue Daphne’s but it opened in the Sixties, long before Mr Caring’s ownership.

Harry’s Dolci is due to launch on December 6.
