It’s all change at Brixton’s Salon.

The Market Row restaurant has closed its doors for a refurb and will open at the start of September complete with a brand new bar and wine shop.

The bar will take over the site’s ground floor, while the wine shop will see the team expand into the next door unit — taking over the existing wine shop from its retiring owner.

It will mean the restaurant’s list has been bolstered significantly thanks to additional stock and storage space, with numerous different vintages of several wines stocked. Customers will also be able to buy wine to take into the restaurant, with a small corkage fee.

Meanwhile, the new bar will serve a menu of snacks and sharing dishes including ‘nduja croquetas with aioli and pappardelle with slow-cooked rabbit ragu alongside classic cocktails and wines. It will also serve weekday lunches.

Homemade pickles, preserves and syrups, which are available to buy, will line the staircase leading to the main dining area.

Balfe, who launched Salon in 2012, said: “We are ready for a bit of a change. When we started out it was planned to be temporary and we never invested much money.”

He added: “When it reopens it will have the same vibe — homely, lived-in and not super smart — but will be a touch more grown up and designed rather than cobbled together, and a bit more comfortable to sit in.”

“The idea is to bring the interior in line with where we see the food being.”

The refurb will also provide more kitchen and back-of-house space, which will allow more butchery and pastry work to be carried out on site and for slightly more complex menus to be prepared.

“This will level the playing field between us and our peers in London,” adds Balfe with ambition. Salon has long been a star in Brixton, and it sounds like it may be getting brighter.

Salon will reopen on Friday September 1. Visit salonbrixton.co.uk.
