Royal Festival Hall’s new restaurant Spiritland inspired by 1970s recording studios

A new restaurant has opened at the Royal Festival Hall – and it’s as passionate about its sound system as it is about its food.

Spiritland, the new 180-cover restaurant at the prestigious performing arts venue, intends to be a “temple to music” and has been designed to look like a 1970s recording studio to emphasise its world-class sound system.

From the team behind the Spiritland bar and cafe in King's Cross, the restaurant boasts custom speakers from bespoke workshop Living Voice. Its interior is meant to emphasise diners’ sonic experience, with decor also inspired by talk show sets, featuring rounded leather booths and custom wall and ceiling panels.

The restaurant also features bespoke velvet curtains made by Broadwick Silks, an atelier to West End theatres, a homage to the performing arts history of the venue.

“We've endeavoured to create a space that combines a sense of intimacy with its own unique acoustic signature,” said Spiritland’s creative director Patrick Clayton-Malone.

“Inspired by 1970's iconic talk show sets and landmark sound studios, Spiritland Royal Festival Hall is focused on bringing a unique experience to the Southbank’s cultural landscape."

As well as food from former The Providores and Tapa Room chef Moondog, the restaurant will also host talks and guest DJs, with programming made in collaboration with BBC Radio 4 arts broadcaster John Wilson. Over the years Spiritland’s King’s Cross site has hosted talks and performances from the likes of Jarvis Cocker, Bill Nighy and Jeff Mills.

Spiritland is now open at Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, Belvedere Road, SE1 8XX. For more information, visit spiritland.com
