Sunday Roasts in London: Oxbo, Bankside

Unfortunately the roast here isn't the strongest part of the Sunday Roast offering, says Ben Norum
Stylish: The restaurant looks better than you might expect for a hotel

Oxbo, set within the Hilton London Bankside, looks rather good for a hotel restaurant.

It’s anything but stuffy — even rather cool — with its wood-paneled wall decked out with fake animal heads (including a unicorn) and a regular live musician strumming away in the corner.

The vibe is very much one of chilled-out Sundays.

The main event: It’s rather unfortunate that at Oxbo the Sunday Roast is far from the high point. A josper-cooked half chicken is indeed moist and pleasantly smoky while beef is served juicy and rare as ordered. However the sides let it down — Yorkshires are dried out as if they’ve been sitting under a heat lamp for a while, veg is unimaginative and underseasoned, and who in the name of the Sunday Overlord wants cherry tomatoes with their roast, like ours came with?

It feels like the chefs (who clearly execute a decent level of skill) aren’t quite sure what a good roast should comprise of.

Half-hearted: Not a roast with the most

The rest: Thankfully everything else at Oxbo is much better. It’s an interesting set-up, with two large buffet tables offering endless supplies of starters and puddings to help yourselves to. From sashimi, ceviche, cured meats, potted crab and zesty salads to mini millionaire's shortbread, lemon meringue pies and even jelly sweets there is plenty to indulge in.

Bountiful: The Oxbo dessert table

When can I try it? Sundays 12-3pm.

Cheque out: A three-course meal and bottomless Prosecco is £40 all-in, or £28 for food only.

Info: Hilton London Bankside, 1-8 Great Suffolk Street, SE1 0UG; oxbobankside.co.uk.
