The soul of Kerala in the heart of Twickenham

10 April 2012

This is a small outpost of an extensive Indian restaurant empire.

Pallavi is one of the simplest and the cheapest, and started its days as a large takeaway counter with just a few seats, then moved over the road from the original site to smarter premises.

The cooking has travelled well, and still deserves the ultimate compliment - it is genuinely home-style, with unpretentious dishes and unpretentious prices.

True to its South Indian roots, there is an impressive list of vegetarian specialities, but the menu features just enough meat and fish dishes to woo any kind of diner.

Start with that South Indian veggie favourite, the Malabar masala dosa.

This huge, crisp pancake is made with a mixture of ground rice and lentil flour, and is a perfect match for the savoury potato mixture and chutney.

Or try the delightfully named iddly, a steamed rice cake made with black gram, which is eaten as a breakfast dish in India.

The main dishes are simple and tasty, and are served without fuss.

For unrepentant carnivores, chicken Malabar or keema methi both hit the spot.

But there are also some interesting fish dishes, including the fish moilee.

Veggies are good, too: try parippu curry, split lentils with cumin, turmeric, garlic, chillies and onions, or the cabbage thoran, sliced cabbage with carrots, green chillies and curry leaves.

The pilau rice, lemon rice and coconut rice are tasty, and the parathas are even better - try a green chilli, or a sweet coconut paratha.
