Tortilla offers fast food with flavour

Thriving off its convenience, fast food usually has its downfalls. In exchange for speed we sacrifice careful preparation, healthiness and taste. Not so in Tortilla’s case.

This burrito bar has it all – quick service and food that is good for you as well as being full of flavour. What adds to the appeal is the friendly staff. Passionate about food, it’s a pleasure to watch your wrap being prepared.

Originating from Mexico and perfected in California, Tortilla is the brainchild of American Brandon Stephens. Brought up on San Francisco-style burritos, he was desperate for them when he moved to the UK. So he acted upon his needs and Tortilla was born – with a branch originally in Islington and now in Southwark.

Considering the more than generous portions, the menu is reasonably priced. The burrito will set you back £4.50 for medium or £5.50 for large. The soft flour tortilla is stuffed with a choice of meat, rice, beans, salsa, guacamole and cheese or sour cream. The fajita wrap (also £4.50 for medium, £5.50 for large) is the same as the burrito, but with sautéed peppers and onions instead of beans. The lower-carb option, the naked burrito (£4.50) provides the filling without the tortilla. There’s also a salad option (£4.50), which has a Romaine lettuce base and is served with meat and a choice of beans, cheese, tomatoes and a selection of dressings.

In terms of meats, you can choose between grilled chicken breast steal or pork, marinated in a special Latin American seasoning. Toppings include: steamed rice with lime and coriander; black or pinto beans; a mild fresh salsa; a medium green salsa; a fiery red salsa; sour cream; Monterey Jack cheese and home-made guacamole. Tacos or soft tortillas complement the wraps perfectly.

An authentic margarita is a refreshing drink option or the Mexican beers are a popular choice. You certainly won’t leave feeling hungry. With plans for expansion, here’s hoping Tortilla is the way forward for fast food chains.
