Trafik gets the green light

Trafik has all the outward trappings of a trendy DJ bar - a Hoxton Square address, cool interior design and a roster of groovy music nights ranging in theme from broken beats to Balearic. So far, so same-y.

The food on offer is a Euro-Caribbean fusion which produced an average, rather dry jerk chicken with rice and peas for £9, a highly peppered smoked chicken and mango salad for £6 and hand-cut chips so chunky they would be better described as quarter potatoes (not that we were complaining there).

What sets Trafik apart from the crowd is the service: it may just have been that we were in on a quiet night (and quite clearly had our sights set on working our way through the cocktail menu) but the bar staff were friendly, efficient and a dab hand at rustling up our chosen drinks.

Of the cocktails we tried (all £6), only the Bellini was a disappointment - our favourites, after much sampling, included the English Summer (crushed fresh strawberries, vanilla vodka and lime) and a delicious little off-menu number our barman offered us at the end of the night, comprising champagne, mixed berries, vodka and other stuff I was too inebriated to remember.

It might have been called a Rasputin, it might also explain my decision to blithely ignore the offer of a taxi and walk home in the rain.
