Where to eat sushi in Soho

This is a bustling, atmospheric izakaya but it's easy to get over-excited and order too much, making it more pricey. Start with nigiri-sushi or, if it's dinner you're after, you can watch the chefs prepare a tightly wrapped California maki or a deluxe sushi platter before singing at the karaoke bar downstairs.

Taro

If you don't mind sharing your tables with others, Taro offers up good, cheap maki rolls and salmon teriyaki. Failing that, for just under a tenner you can opt for a bento box and try the lot. A good choice for a quick bite at the less expensive end of the sushi spectrum.

Mitzukoshi

You'll need a full purse but the selection of lunchtime sashimi is well worth the pennies. Alternatively, try the "hana" set — a mixture of fatty tuna, yellow tail, seabass and sea urchin and served with soup — from the à la carte evening sushi menu. Sample the mouth-watering mackerel rolls, too.

Kulu Kulu Sushi

Thanks to the characteristic sushi conveyor belt, this has a distinctly Tokyo feel. Expect extremely fresh seafood, with dishes including weet ama ebi (raw prawns) salmon-skin hand rolls threatening to burst at the seams and generous portions.

Centrepoint Sushi

For such a humble place, the sushi here is well above average. There won't be a queue but the extensive menu includes moreish, expertly rolled maki-sushi — try the softshell crab option. The scallop and sea bream nigiri is also maddeningly addictive.
