A Deliveroo cyclist has praised the “important” work of youth homeless charity after delivering a free Christmas meal to Centrepoint residents.

Alice Wright was one of the delivery cyclists taking more than £10,000 of free meals to hostels in London.

The online food delivery company took free restaurant meals to 500 people living in accommodation provided by the youth homeless charity Centrepoint as it backed our Homeless Helpline appeal.

"I love cycling around London, making deliveries, but this was not my average day,” Alice said.

The hostel residents enjoyed a full Christmas meal

“I took some gorgeous Christmas cakes to a hostel and everyone was so excited to see me.

“There was a proper Christmas dinner ordered too - roast chicken, roast potatoes and loads of veg from a restaurant called Cocotte.”

The Standard’s Young and Homeless Helpline appeal is raising money to help Centrepoint launch the first national Freephone service for people aged between 16 and 25 facing homelessness or already sleeping rough.

Callers will be able to get advice and support about housing and be linked to services to help them with other issues linked to their homelessness, including mental health, addiction and family breakdown.

Deliveroo wanted to help fund the helpline but also to make a gesture to people in Centrepoint hostel accommodation by offering a meal delivered by and paid for by the company.

Alice, 21, said the Christmas celebration hostel, catering for 15 to 25-year-olds, had a “great atmosphere”.

She said: “I was invited to stay for a little while and listen the guys tell cracker jokes.

“It was so nice to be able to bring some cheer to those in need.

“Even such a small way. Especially given the people there were around my age. Really brings home how important the work of Centrepoint is."
