Winchester, the ancient cathedral city in Hampshire, falls within the crucial 60-minute commuting time of London.

Trains to Waterloo take a tad under one hour, and there is quick access to the south coast and Channel ports, perfect for City bankers with a yacht moored in the Solent.

It’s even the happiest place to live in the UK, according to a recent Royal Mail “quality of life” survey.

For most commuters, close proximity to good schools and a quick dash to the station are must-haves.

Knights Quarter, a stylish new enclave of 200 homes, is a 10-minute walk from the medieval city centre and train station.

Berkeley Homes, the developer, is selling apartments and townhouses in tastefully landscaped grounds.

The homes may also appeal to weekenders from London who want country walks in the New Forest and the South Downs National Park.

Prices from £300,000. Call 01962 679000.
