Crossrail commuter town: new waterside flats near Maidenhead train station and shopping district

New flats near Maidenhead's new-look station, shopping precinct and riverbank.
From £310,000: apartments at Watermark in Maidenhead will benefit from a new public square and the Berkshire market town's Crossrail links

Away from Reading town centre, urban development quickly gives way to a belt of countryside scattered with small villages, many lining the Thames or other rivers and protected with listed buildings, conservation areas and narrow lanes that limit the scale of new building.

Local agents say prices are about 10 per cent lower than comparable properties further west in Oxfordshire.

Maidenhead was due to be the end of the Crossrail line before it was extended to Reading.

The Great Western Railway transformed Maidenhead into a commuter town and its handsome Victorian red-brick architecture is one of the legacies from that period.

Crossrail is having a regeneration impact, too, with a station facelift and a large new shopping precinct, with homes part of the mix.

The town enjoys a lovely location on a rural stretch of the Thames.

The riverbank is being upgraded for housing and recreation, while access to it from the town centre is being improved by restoring a stagnant stream into a navigable waterway with towpath.

Watermark is a scheme of 229 flats and a new public square.

Prices from £310,000. Call Countryside Properties on 01628 873617.
