From odd jobs to grand top-to-bottom overhauls, regardless of project size or budget, it can be a challenge to get any home improvement project off the ground.

Some swear by moodboards, Pinterest and Instagram hashtags but disappearing down those rabbit holes, while useful, can prove exhausting.

Lockdowns have instilled newfound appreciation for even the tiniest of outdoor spaces to call our own, so it’s hardly surprising that garden ideas have been in increasing demand – with ‘garden rooms’ rising in popularity by an emphatic 97 per cent at the end of last year compared to the same time in 2019 on home renovation and online design platform Houzz.

Searches for ‘extensions’ rose by 94 per cent; ‘bathroom ideas’ by 91 per cent and ‘bespoke kitchens’ by 51 per cent.

Looking ahead to what we might expect to see in homes later this year, ‘sage green units’ and ‘wall panelling’ feature on the design ideas site’s most popular search terms list for the first time.

Homes & Property has featured a host of renovation projects to inspire homeowners who want to unlock potential, modernise and transform their current property.

A fixer-upper home oozing chic design inspiration was one such project.

The formerly dark house in Kensal Rise was transformed into an open, family-friendly home with a colourful vibe, all awash in natural light.

Highlights include customised Ikea cabinets colour-matched to a rose-pink Acne shopping bag and a brass splashback to match the panel set into the kitchen island.

Other epic projects have included a total renovation, more like a disembowelment, of a Victorian terrace house in Stoke Newington.

With a project cost of £480,000 – much more than most of us could dream of having in the renovation kitty – it was a spectacular upgrade and, packed with flexible living space ideas, it achieved a £1.9 million offer from the first person to view it.

Such expertise can give the rest of us ideas for upgrading our own homes — on a more modest scale and far more cheaply.

Challenging skinny homes feature on our list, too, with one couple maximising every inch of space in their quirky Brixton house which, though long, is only 9ft 8in wide.

Whether you’re looking to extend, get more from awkward spaces or future-proof a property with eco-friendly or hi-tech renovations, see our gallery above for ingenious ideas used in home makeovers by award-winning architects and designers.
