LuxuryMade at Olympia: the new design show that will lift your home into the glamour zone

A new design show opening at Olympia on 21 September is called LuxuryMade. With 40 brands displaying craftsmanship rather than bling, it is timely, for luxury is the buzz word for London homes this autumn.

LuxuryMade sits alongside the two other established decor shows that open on Sunday 18 September: Focus, in the glassy domes of Chelsea’s Design Centre, and Decorex, to the west in a vast tent in Isleworth.

But what is luxury? As always it’s tricky to define, but you can safely expect exclusive design (frequently bespoke), fine materials, superb craftsmanship, authenticity, and maybe a dollop of so-called heritage for good measure.

Spend wisely on one or two pieces from this “top end” of the market to lift your home into the glamour zone: for example, a made-to-order rug, a commissioned coffee table, a wall of patterned-paper tailored to your room or a stunning chandelier.

Fill in the gaps with budget paints and background basics from the high street. Add a few fine details, such as an intricate curtain braid, perhaps, or a quirky door handle.

Bring in pieces of handmade ceramics or glass. This is the creative eclectic look Londoners are so good at - a look that is envied and emulated all over the world.

LuxuryMade is appropriately displayed in the Pillar Halls at Olympia, recently re-opened for general use with its high-Victorian marble Corinthian pillars and a richly-coloured panelled ceiling.

Here new faces like RCA graduate Emma Shipley (moving from scarves into furnishing fabrics) to well-established Zoffany (a superb collection called Phaedra) to Gainsborough Silks, where Karen Beauchamp (formerly of Cole’s) has done sumptuous new weaves for this old-established Suffolk mill.
