Having a swimming pool in the grounds of your own home has to be the ultimate luxury, alongside private home cinema rooms and enough space for the supercars. With plenty more summer sunshine to come and UK staycations on the rise, demand is soaring.

A private pool is a lavish addition to any home — and it's certain to make sure yours is the setting-of-choice for alfresco drinks parties, whatever the season.

"Most buyers don’t actually set out to buy a house with a swimming pool, then get very excitable when they discover one – they usually start talking about parties," says Joanna Cocking, head of Prime & Country House at Hamptons International.

"The current fashion is ‘pond pools’ or infinity pools as buyers want their pool to look beautiful all year round.”

And it seems demand for private pools is showing no signs of slowing with ownership numbers on the rise. An estimated 250,000 pools are now in residences across the UK according to The Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association (SPATA).

"The popularity of staycations has seen hotels invest in pools and there has also been a steep rise in the number of hot tubs being installed in holiday accommodation throughout the British Isles," says Chris Hayes, Managing director at SPATA.

Pools are not just being added to contempory homes, with owners of historic properties and spacious grounds choosing to make space to splash. For example, this converted mill house in West Sussex has a sunken terrace area, outdoor pool and far-reaching views over the South Downs National Park.

Or this five-bedroom home on the prestigious St George's Hill estate in Weybridge, Surrey, counts an infinity pool, cinema room and triple garage among super-glamorous perks.
