On gated land bordering the former Metropolitan Water Board HQ, the architecture is "modern Georgian" and slots confidently into this prized conservation area. New River is an artificial channel cut originally from springs in Hertfordshire to New River Head at Rosebery Avenue in Clerkenwell. It remains an essential part of the capital's water supply. Later, an estate of wide streets and garden squares was built, evolving into a village-like neighbourhood.
