A child died and another was seriously injured in Kent after being hit by a tree that fell over amid strong winds.

The tragedy took place in woodlands off Parsonage Lane in the village of Bobbing, near Sittingbourne on Friday.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around midday.

A child was pronounced dead at the scene, while another was flown to a hospital in London for treatment to serious injuries.

The incident happened amid winds of up to 50mph around the UK.

Kent police said in a statement: "Officers attended alongside South East Coast Ambulance Service, the air ambulance and Kent Fire and Rescue Service.

"One child was declared deceased at the scene and another child was airlifted to a London hospital with serious injuries.

"Kent Police is preparing a report for the coroner."
