Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson will miss the rest of the season as a result of the knee injury he sustained against Brighton.

The Englishman was forced off in the final stages of the Reds' 3-1 Premier League win at Amex Stadium on Wednesday following a seemingly innocuous challenge with Yves Bissouma.

Jurgen Klopp struck a pessimistic note when asked about the issue in his post-match interview, saying: "We have to see what is with Hendo because that’s, of course, not so good news how it looks in the moment but we have to wait."

However, speaking ahead of the champions' meeting with Burnley this weekend, the German was in positive mood as he revealed that his skipper does not require surgery and should be fit for the start of next season.

"Hendo is actually the best possible of all bad news," Klopp said. "It’s a knee injury but no surgery needed.

"Yes, he will not play anymore this season, but I’m pretty positive that he will start with us the new season.

"We were all concerned in the moment when we saw him going down and when he left the pitch and stuff like this.

"Yesterday, when we got the news it was a big relief for all of us. It’s not cool, obviously, but it’s the best we could get.

"Hendo is a quick healer and he will be back soon."

Henderson’s injury is likely to prevent him lifting the Premier League trophy with the ‘shuffle’ that has become a trademark following Liverpool’s recent successes.

But Klopp insists his captain will still be the one to pick up the prize when the season comes to an end.

He added: “We all felt [concern] very much. It was an awful moment when he went down and left the pitch we knew immediately.

“In Germany, you would say he is an animal. Hendo fights with everything, if he has pain he will never tell you. He can really deal well with pain so in this moment it was a complete mood killer.

“We won 3-1 great, I told them winning an away game in the Premier League is exceptional for all teams, it was exceptional for us, and we should be really happy about that.

“Then you realise Hendo is around the corner. Everyone felt for him. He deserves to lift the trophy and he will lift the trophy.

“No surgery needed. That is the good news, all the rest we can make our decisions around the trophy lift but Hendo will lift the trophy.”
